Teach a Man to Fish

I attended a memorial service yesterday for a very good man. His name was Robert Schiff. Mr. Schiff was not only a very successful businessman; he was person who gave back to the community in ways big and small. At the service, his family painted a wonderful tableaux of a dedicated and loving family man, a person who loved and celebrated life and someone who truly loved his “Cincinnata.”

I only met Mr. Schiff a few times; nevertheless his contributions to CET impact me and you everyday. Long before small non-profit organizations like CET thought about investments and endowments as important parts of their future plan, Mr. Schiff did.

I found a letter from Mr. Schiff in our files dated January 10, 1977. In the letter was a certificate for 10 Shares of Cincinnati Financial stock, Mr. Schiff’s new company. The letter “suggested” that this stock might be used to set up an endowment fund to help with future needs of the organization. Here was a man who was sharing not only his money but his good advice. Over the years Mr. Schiff continued to share both with CET and many other local non profit organizations.

Bob Schiff will be missed by his family and community but his contributions to this community live on.

I Can't Find What Is On CET!

I got a great call yesterday from a viewer. While she was very pleasant and polite, she was also very frustrated with us at CET. She is a loyal viewer, but is having trouble knowing what is on our various channels. She was asking if we planned to “print” a comprehensive Program Guide.

While we do print a guide for some of the channels and time periods, I explained to her that the volume of information, the number of programs and channels precluded the “printing” and “mailing” of such a comprehensive guide. I pointed her to www.CETconnect.org. While the complete schedule for the channels is there, she noted that she did not have a computer at home and that she has been unable to “print” the information at the library. (BTW - We are working on that problem right now working with our partners at the Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library.)

The root issue is important and to tell you the truth we, and others, have yet to find a good way to provide up-to-date program information for all our channels that is available to everyone and within out limited budget. We continue to study the problem and would solicit your ideas.

I didn’t want this holiday to pass without thanking all who have contributed to CET over the past year. I’m speaking of all contributions not only financial. The number of volunteers that give time and talent to CET is nothing short of extraordinary.

Our Board of Trustees has spent countless hours this past year helping to fashion Public Media Connect, a consolidation of CET and ThinkTV. This merger will help assure that the stations can continue to offer robust and valued services to the region long into the future.

Others volunteer time for the “Auction,” “Live on CET” and the on-air campaigns. Some spend 40 hours or more each week. I dare not mention names as I would need pages and pages.

Our donors too have responded this year. For sure there have been fiscal challenges for CET as there have been for most organizations. Even with these challenges, our contributors have remained loyal and committed. Some have told us that they needed to cut back on the amounts but wanted to stay involved.

On behalf of all the staff and volunteers at CET, THANK YOU. We hope you enjoy the holiday.

What a Gem We Have in Cincinnati!

I can’t help gushing about one of our wonderful CETconnect.org Partners for a moment. Last evening, I attended CCM’s production of Hair at the Corbett Auditorium. From the moment we sat down and began thumbing through our programs to the final song, “Let the Sunshine In,” I was deeply moved in my seat. And we had great seats. While you wait there is an overwhelmingly affecting slideshow of photographs from the turmoil, unrest, and youth culture revolution going on in the 1960’s on the screen. If you are an avid news consumer, you can’t help but draw comparisons to the political climate we find ourselves in today. I don’t want to be a spoiler, but there are photos of Lennon and Ono, Jerry Garcia, Richard Nixon, a burning Buddhist monk on a city street, and several other striking photographs; powerful, though silent, symbols of an era that is still a much talked about period of American history. The slideshow was the perfect way to get audiences in the realm of thinking about this time period, which was the perfect introduction to the characters we were about to meet.

The breadth of talent on the stage is incredible. That is why I am writing this short entry – just to encourage all of you to get over to CCM and see a production, because I highly doubt you will be disappointed. From the set design, to the lighting, music, and costumes, all of it has the sheen of a premiere theatrical production. And the talent. That’s the real crux of going to see a performance at CCM. Last evening I was blown away by the voices of the actors, the commitment to their roles, and the flawlessness of the blocking and feel of the show. There was not an awkward moment, I thought, during Hair that would remind me I am watching CCM students in performance. The whole show, to me, was a real story occurring before my eyes. The musical performances must be partially the reason – their voices blend perfectly together or reach amazing heights during the solos, giving the auditorium a tangible electricity.

I realize you have other options in Cincinnati to see musical theatre or drama, but the truth is there is so much excitement in watching the next Broadway, film, or theatre stars perform as though their lives depended on it. Kudos to CCM, the actors, performers, the rock band/musicians, the stage crew of Hair, and Aubrey Berg, CCM’s Musical Theatre Chair. It just so happens to be the 40th anniversary of Hair AND the 40th Anniversary of CCM Musical Theatre. Hair runs through this Saturday at CCM.

I cannot wait for the next performance I am able to see at CCM!

History Detectives Names New Host

Calling all History Detectives fans...

A new host will be joining the popular PBS history series next season. PBS tells us that Dr. Eduardo Pagan, who some of you may have seen as a guest on several cases this past summer, will be joining Wes Cowan and crew full time in season 8 ( kicking off late spring/early summer 2010).

Apparently, Pagan is a historian, History Detectives fan and a professor at Arizona State University. Did anyone see him on the show this summer? If so, what were your thoughts?

Also, be sure to submit your stories to PBS and the History Detectives crew now while they are looking for cases for next summer. You may just end up being selected for the show! Last summer, two cases had Cincinnati ties... one of which you can learn more about here.

For all of those Masterpiece Mystery! Inspector Lewis fans out there, I have some great news for this weekend. We will be airing some new episodes this coming Sunday, October 4.

Just in case you were wondering why Inspector Lewis wasn't on for a couple of weeks, here is a brief explanation, so you can figure out which episode in the series to expect this week. In order to make up for missing some of the Inspector Lewis airdates for fundraising, we ended up airing two episodes of Mystery! Inspector Lewis back-to-back on Saturday, 9/26 from 8pm - 11pm. Those two episodes were "Series II: Life Born of Fire" and "Series II: The Great and the Good."

Here is the schedule for the rest of the Inspector Lewis series on CET - don't miss them!

CET Wants Your Kings Island Home Movies

By now, you've probably heard the buzz about CET's Kings Island documentary, Riding History to the Limits, we are working on, which you can see now on CETconnect.

But, we're not done yet.

Producer Nate Byrum is looking for home movies for use with the Kings Island project. We'd love your DVDs, but if you have VHS or other formats, we can work with those too. Here's what he is looking for specifically:

Channel 48 Over The Air Back (almost)

For those who have had difficulty receiving CET over-the-air, I am happy to report that we have made repairs are back on our virtual channels 48-1 and 48-2. On some televisions and Set Top Converters you may need to delete 34-3, 34-4, and 34-5 and then do a rescan to pick us up correctly. On most TVs and converters a simple rescan will pick us up. We don't have the program guide working but it should be available soon.

If you are on cable or use a satellite service you don’t need to do anything.

Problems Getting CET?

Saturday night we had a power outage the studio building and we are still working on some issues with damaged equipment. You may have lost CHANNEL 48 over-the-air broadcasts on your converter boxes and/or digital TV Sets. Please rescan and you will pick us up on 34-1, 34-2, and 34-3. The 34-3 is the World channel. There will not be a program guide on this channel.

Sorry for the problems. With digital systems reliable power is critical even with back up systems in place. We continue to work with Duke Energy to try to minimize the number of power outages in our part of downtown Cincinnati.

After Obama: Race and Politics in Cincinnati

With the election in 2005 of Mark Mallory as the first popularly-elected African American Mayor of Cincinnati and the election of Barack Obama as President, has there been a shift in Cincinnati's political and social mindset regarding race? In what ways is this most evident?

Lincoln Legacy project partners sponsored a series of community discussion groups facilitated and hosted by The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. Many community co-convenors sent representatives to participate in these discussions and frame questions like these for a televised discussion.

On Wednesday night CET will be hosting this Town Hall live to discuss this question and many others that will help our community have a clearer understanding of where we are now on issues of race, justice, and equal opportunity for all. Featured guest Ambassador Andrew Young and a local panel made up of Jan-Michele Lemon Kearney, Judge Nathaniel Jones, Father Michael Graham, and Maria Molina will participate in an interactive community conversation with our audience. WCPO news anchor Clyde Gray will be moderating the discussion.

For Erich The Audience Came First

Today’s news of Erich Kunzel’s death prompted me to look back on the TV programs that CET helped bring to PBS and how lucky I was to have a small part in those programs. For sure, the programs were hard work. The rehearsals and actual taping sessions at Music Hall did not always go as planned.

One thing that stands out in my mind is that Erich was always in charge. Not in a domineering way. Not in an egotistical way. He controlled those TV programs like the fine conductor that he was. He was able to coax from all involved their very best….the musicians, the singers and dancers, the camera operators and the stage hands. We all wanted to do our best for the show and most importantly, for the audience in the hall and in living rooms throughout the nation.

The other thing I remember is how proud he was of all the talent coming from SCPA and CCM. He was never happier than when he could spotlight these young people on the local and national stage.

Above all Erich never forgot the audience. An accomplished musician, he was also the consummate showman. All of us lost an icon today.

How To Find Your Public TV Stations

If you are a Time Warner Cable customer, you already know that some major changes in the channel line up and selection have been implemented today. You will still find “good old” CET on Basic Cable service either on Channel 8 or 13 in most communities, but many of the public television digital channels have been deleted or moved to new channel assignments.

CET/ThinkTV & Time Warner Continue to Discuss Regional Services

We have been getting calls and emails regarding some upcoming changes in the public TV channels available locally on Time Warner Cable.

On July 23, Time Warner Cable informed southwestern Ohio’s public television stations, CET and ThinkTV16 & 14 that the Cincinnati and Dayton cable systems would be making programming and channel changes beginning on August 25. The changes include significantly cutting the number of public television channels available to Time Warner customers.
On July 30, 2009, at our request, we met with a Time Warner representative. We proposed a channel line-up for public television that, while reducing the number of channels, would assure:

1. That all Time Warner customers, including those with basic cable service, would continue to receive the local PBS stations that they have watched and enjoyed for decades.

2. That customers who subscribe to Time Warner’s digital program services continue to receive public television’s variety of DTV programming.

In short, we want to make sure that Time Warner provides its southwestern Ohio customers their local Ohio-based public television stations. To that end we are continuing a dialog with the company to assure consistent public television service throughout the region – and reduce viewer and Time Warner customer confusion about the changes being made. We plan to meet today to continue that discussion.

As we learn more, we will continue to inform you, our viewers and members.

Facing the Mortgage Crisis

On this week's episode of Focus, Kathy Lehr talks with two specialists and a homeowner caught in the mortgage crisis. RIP Mollie Sugden

Yesterday was a sad day for all the Are You Being Served fans out there. Mollie Sugden aka. Mrs. Slocombe passed away at the age of 86.

Allow Homeless to Move into Foreclosed Homes? Sound Off Here.

It's hard to turn on the evening news or pick up a newspaper without hearing the F word now-a-days.

Foreclosure.

It's a widespread problem across America that is no longer just a concern among the lower class. With the dwindling economy and loss of jobs countrywide, it's getting to be everyone's problem. And a lot of times, as new problems arise, people begin to troubleshoot with possible solutions.

Something that NOW on PBS is talking about tonight on their program (8:30pm on CET) really caught my eye, and this is the first I've heard of this: A Miami, FL man who advocates for the homeless believes America's homeless should be put up in foreclosed homes.

Rameau's organization, Take Back the Land, identifies empty homes that are still livable and tries to find responsible families willing to take the enormous legal risks of moving in. According to NOW on PBS, Rameau says leaving these homes empty is immoral, and he knows this is completely illegal, but partakes in the act anyway.

I have to admit, since I'm just coming upon this, I'm impartial, but curious how everyone else feels. Should America's homeless be left to find their own housing? If these homes are empty anyway, especially for a lengthy period of time, what should be done with them? I'm torn here: on one hand, why not? It gets homeowners and families off the streets. However, for those who got themselves into this mess by taking on mortgages that they couldn't handle, it's essentially a free ride. According to Take Back the Land, these homeowners can live in the foreclosed homes until they are able to save up money to legitimately purchase their own home. How many of them are abusing that privilege for a free ride? You have to wonder if that's happening.

I'm curious to learn more. Anyone who knows more about this organization, please feel free to chime in.

Preview Dyer's New Special

This weekend, Dr. Wayne Dyer's newest special, Excuses Begone! will be hitting the CET airwaves. This time, Dyer will help you define the 18 most commonly used, self-defeating excuses and teach you how to change those habits. Not only that, he's celebrating 10 years on public television, and it's likely that his daughter, Sky, will perform (which, she generally does in these extended specials).

PBS has a preview of Excuses Begone! up on Youtube. From the trailer, it looks like it'll be a good show, and people seem to get very excited about Dr. Dyer. But it got me thinking... are motivational speakers really saying anything we haven't heard before? Sure, we can all use a little self help once in a while, and who hasn't been guilty of making excuses in life? Especially now that times are tough, excuses tend to be the easy way out when dealing with problems. But growing up, isn't that what our parents tried to teach us? Maybe it's just nice to have a reminder, especially when things aren't running smoothly in life. Do you watch? Why? Does Dyer present the facts of life in a way that other people in your life don't?

I have to admit, sometimes I don't get into these self help "experts" but Dyer seems to be the one I relate to more than anyone else. Other people must relate to him too, or else he wouldn't be celebrating 10 years on public television. So obviously, he's doing something right!

David Tennant to Host Masterpiece this Fall

What does Masterpiece have to do with Doctor Who?

David Tennant (the well-known British actor that is best known for his role on Doctor Who and Casanova) has been announced as the new host for Masterpiece Contemporary, which premieres this October.

It appears the premiere will be Endgame, a gripping new drama about the final days of apartheid in South Africa. No date yet, but I'll be sure and keep you updated as I hear more about the episodes for the fall.

Regular Weekend Programs Moving to CET Create

This weekend, we will be airing some of our viewer favorites, including My Music: The '60s, The Best of Al Schottelkotte, Victor Borge, and new programs like Be Well Now! with Nancy Snyderman and Hollywood Singing and Dancing: A Musical Treasure. We hope you'll tune in to these programs which you've told us you enjoy. (For air dates and times, click here.)

But at CET, we're always trying new things, especially those that we know can serve you, our viewers better. So this weekend, we're experimenting a little. Instead of pre-empting our regularly scheduled weekend programming, we'll be airing it on CET Create (digital 48.2). Now you can watch your favorite music or how-to special and still have the opportunity to catch the new episode of Masterpiece Mystery!

This is a test-run for us, so we'd like to hear your feedback about it. Do you like having the choice between programs? Are you having trouble finding Create? (If so, this link may help... especially if you have cable service)

Help us spread the word and let your friends know about the change. We'll also be reminding you on-air about the change and direct you to where you can find your favorite CET programs.

The 'NewsHour' to get a makeover?

According to today's New York Times, PBS is planning a makeover for the long-running nightly news program, The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. Changes are expected soon, maybe even as soon as this fall and may include a retitling of the program to: PBS NewsHour. Looks as if Mr. Lehrer will have a co-anchor on the new format; one of the existing team members may step up to the new position.

Change is good, so we'll see what happens with this one. PBS says they're only making positive changes to make the program more engaging and interactive. In this day and age people want to be connected to their news source, they want to feel like their voice is heard. I think it's going to be a positive thing.

Watch The Celebration

CET, Cincinnati, the nation’s first licensed Public TV Station, marked a milestone early this morning when we signed off for the last time our analog transmitter. For some 55 years we have provided analog service to the community. You can watch a brief video of this event by clicking here.

With our new digital transmission capacity and innovative one online services, CET and our new partners, ThinkTV, will continue and expand the quality services to the region.

Early this morning at 12:01 AM, CET turned off the analog transmitter once and for all. This transition has been many years in the making and is the result of wonderful community support and board leadership.

We are staffed to handle any increase in calls from viewers who may have some problems. So far today there have been very few. Perhaps our aggressive information campaign has paid off. We will be here during the evening hours as well as some people may not realize they have a problem until they try to watch us this evening.

CET Moves to Digital This Friday

When CET went on the air on July 26, 1954, only 500 television sets could even receive the signal. The first program was a 30-minute program called Tel-A-Story and it featured an adult sharing a story with several children.

It's hard to believe that now CET touches millions of lives with your favorite public television series and programs, but also local programming like the Fifth Third Business Beat, Focus, In the Tank, Sacred Spaces and more. We've come a long way since '54 and being the first licensed public television station in the nation... and this week we are welcoming another new change: the digital transition.

Surely by now we've all seen the DTV PSA's, tickers, mailings, etc warning us about the DTV switch. It's been a long time coming, even being pushed back by the President to allow Americans more time to prepare. Back in March CET announced we would shut off our analog transmitter on May 1 at 12:01am... and we fully intend on doing that this week, so we hope you're prepared now! If not, CET still provides resources here and converter coupons are still available from the FCC.

This will be a historic event for us at CET-- we'll actually be gathering together Thursday evening to shut the analog transmitter down for the final time. When you wake up Friday morning, CET will be part of the future of television-- all digital, all the time. And I think some of our staff will be very excited to help press that button!

Check Out Our Doghouse!

Although we had a ton of cute stuff come through CET for the Action Auction, the doghouse that Construction Specialists made for our Clifford-themed "Live on CET!" gala is absolutely ADORABLE!

Surely, you've seen Clifford the Big Red Dog on CET before. He's the cute, cuddly, oversized pooch that loves children, reading and of course, dog bones and treats. This doghouse was built for CET for the gala to be used as an auction item. It's definitely a Clifford-style doghouse that would be a great home for any pooch (even big dogs like Clifford himself).

We'll have more information to come on this auction item and others, but it was so cute, I couldn't resist telling you all about it. Stay tuned for pics of the final product-- this photo is actually from when it was still being built.

A Q&A with Fabien Cousteau tomorrow on PBS Engage

You may have seen the first episode of Jean-Michel Cousteau's Ocean Adventures earlier this month on CET (the second and final installment "Killer Whales" airs tomorrow, 4/22, at 9pm). The stunning visuals will leave you speechless and nobody does ocean exploration like Cousteau.

To celebrate Earth Day, our friends at PBS are hosting a live chat/Q&A on PBS Engage. Fabien Cousteau, third generation oceanographer will be answering fans questions. You can log on today to submit your question, or simply tune in tomorrow for the chat at 2pm EDT.

You can also check out our recent interview with Carrie Vonderhaar, a local woman who is now the chief photographer for Cousteau's Ocean Futures Society. Her work is absolutely incredible- whether you're a photography nut or not, it's truly beautiful. (For example, the photo above)

Wow! So much going on at CET today. In studio B, we're getting set up for the wonderful folks for LaRosas, who will be feeding us this week... while in Studio A, the auction boards are being set, logos being placed, signs hung and phones being rung. We're testing everything to ensure this auction is the best one yet!

Not only that, we're still cataloging items, taking photos for the web (because you can preview items now, of course!) writing scripts and tying all the loose ends we need for this big production! The auction buzz is certainly in the air, the coffee pots are about to go into overdrive, and all in all I think we're almost READY!

It's a Transformation!

If you've ever been on a tour of the CET studios, or been here to volunteer, attend an event, etc, you know Studio A is a HUGE space! But during the Action Auction, that huge space fills up rather quickly... and it's amazing how fast things are coming together around here.

In this post, there's a few shots of the studio that I snapped this morning. The boards are up and the phones are being connected... not to mention the lights and cameras being put into place. This being my first auction, I'm not sure what to expect (and I'm sure the several other coworkers I have who are auction newbs are a bit apprehensive too!) but it's getting exciting around here.

Yesterday we had a delicious lunch for our Auction Kickoff event (which is an annual occurrence around here, I'm told) and spent some quality time sharing auction stories and memories. Now it's CRUNCH TIME! as we get these last few items cataloged, photographed and ready for you to bid on. You can see what we have so far, of course, here.

The Auction is 8 days away!

Things are a little less quiet around CET this week. From time to time I hear a bang, crash, boom! The sounds of the production crew preparing the studios for our annual Action Auction, of course. Over near the Auction office, volunteers are hard at work cataloging items, writing auction scripts and getting into the spirit. After all, the biggest event of the year is only 8 days away.

I'm nervous but excited, because this is my first auction. I came to CET in August, so all of this is a completely new experience for me. But, everyone assures me we're going to have a ton of fun this year (much like every year) and for all of you viewers, it's an exciting time of year! I'm admiring some of the items up for bid this year. In fact, we have some REALLY neat stuff: a handcrafted dollhouse, tickets to the first home UC football game, tickets to the Kentucky Speedway, Disney World passes, vacation homes, art, furniture, and more. The variety of items is outstanding, and of course I can't name them all here, but you can click here for a preview. (Personally, I'm in love with the large paper mache duck donated by Color Brite Display. How can you resist it?!)

All in all, it's going to be a busy week for everyone here at CET. We're loading up on coffee and working hard to get everything together for a successful auction. We just need you, of course! So mark your calendar and make a date with the TV on these days:

Happy Arts Advocacy Day!

Sure, today is April Fools Day, but more importantly, it's Arts Advocacy Day. Today, all around America, supporters of the arts are meeting with lawmakers and each other to brainstorm ways to advocate for more arts education in our schools. With budgets so tight these days, many schools have to hold levies to ensure they don't have to cut school programs. However, so often, levies fail and programs must be cut.

Surely, everyone has experienced the arts growing up. In my school district, students had to have a fine arts credit in high school, and I spent many years in the elementary and middle school chorus. I even had a brief stint playing violin in fourth grade. Music is now one of my addictions, but I wouldn't have grown to appreciate the arts if I hadn't been introduced to the arts while I was in school. Any other former violinists out there? What are your fondest memories of the arts?

It's so important that we continue to advocate for the arts-- although having a whole dedicated to arts awareness, it's truly something to work on everyday. TV Dinners Make a Digital Comeback

In 1953, the Swanson Company introduced Americans to the TV Dinner. Since that time millions of little aluminum foil trays of chicken, peas and mashed potatoes the consistency of Play-Doh™ have been baked in ovens all over this country. This not only has contributed to landfill problems with all that aluminum going into the garbage, it has wasted energy, since traditional ovens are used to cook these dinners.

Well, the TV dinner has gone digital and the environment will be better for it.There is a new high tech start up company in the Silicon Valley that will introduce a line of TV dinners this week. They promise that the dinners will be both nutritious and environmentally friendly.

The company, DigiEaT Systems (www.dietsyst.com) is partnering with several TV makers to take advantage of a little known byproduct of the new digital over-the-air broadcasting.Most people don’t realize that over-the-air broadcasting makes use of high frequency radio waves. These microwaves are the same waves that are concentrated in the microwave oven in your kitchen. Concentrating these waves on your popcorn or your TV dinner makes them heat up and cook very efficiently.

DigiEaT has contracted with LG, the world’s largest Digital TV manufacturer, to develop a TV set that has a special slot into which you can insert the new TV dinners. Gone is the aluminum foil packaging since this would disrupt the flow of microwaves. Instead, all packaging is made of the recycled paper from TV Guide Magazine making them very environmentally friendly.

Once inserted into the TV, the user will select the cooking time by changing the channel number on the tuner. The higher the channel number selected the faster the dinner will cook. Since it takes more power to transmit video on Channel 48 than it does for Channel 9, these dinners will certainly be popular with Public TV viewers and may even attract new ones to CET/PBS.

DigiEaT and LG plan to have dinners and compatible TVs in stores on April 1st.

CET Recognized for Foreclosure Phone-a-thon

You may recall the foreclosure phone-a-thon and Focus program that CET, the Home Ownership Center of Greater Cincinnati, Fannie Mae and other partners worked together on last month. It was an incredible success, with more than 3,000 callers resulting in 2,000 open cases! Just goes to show how important resources like the Home Ownership Center are and how many people are faced with foreclosure in our area.

We are glad we've been able to help so many of you avoid foreclosure, and yesterday Mayor Mark Mallory and City Council were able to hear just what CET and our phone-a-thon partners have been doing for area residents. Rick Williams of the Home Ownership Center spoke to City Council and shared the success of the February phone-a-thon, and then Laketa Cole gave some very nice remarks regarding the project. It's good to know that not only are our residents tuning in and taking advantage of these resources, but there are council members who support the project as well.

Our Focus producer, Andy Dahmann, and I represented CET-- I must say it was a neat experience (actually my first time being in City Hall). Not to mention, the decor inside City Hall is BEAUTIFUL! Anyone else been in council chambers? It's quite a neat place... I encourage everyone to check it out sometime.

In this video, John Hope Franklin, pre-eminent American historian and winner of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, speaks about his autobiography, Mirror to America: One Man's Fight for Civil Rights.

John Hope Franklin was James B. Duke Professor of History Emeritus and for seven years was Professor of Legal History at Duke University's Law School. His best known work is From Slavery to Freedom: A History of African-Americans. Dr. Franklin served on a variety of commissions and boards, and was the recipient of numerous awards, including 126 honorary degrees.In February of 2001, Duke University opened the John Hope Franklin Center for Interdisciplinary and International Studies, which seeks to promote "innovative approaches to research and teaching on race, equality, and other fundamental issues of social life and human understanding."

John Hope Franklin passed away Wednesday, March 25, 2009.

CET says goodbye to analog on May 1

CET will cease analog service on Friday, May 1 at 12:01 a.m. Yesterday we filed the paperwork with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to cease analog transmission prior to the June 12 deadline set by Congress. In order to shut down analog transmission early, stations had to inform the FCC by March 17.

We realize this can be a confusing transition for some viewers. That is why we have a number of resources available on our website, CETconnect.org, to help consumers prepare themselves for this transition.

You can log on to CETconnect.org for information on the DTV switch, including how to obtain coupons for converter boxes, frequently asked questions and diagrams and videos that demonstrate how to install converter boxes. You can also check in at our Tech Info Blog where Jack will keep you updated on the latest DTV news.

In addition to the resources available online, you can call CET’s Tech Info line at 513-345-6512 for more information or send an e-mail to techinfo@cetconnect.org. CET staff will also be available to take calls and e-mails from individuals that have questions after the switch has taken place.

As you all know, public television is made possible by the incredible support from our viewers and friends. We are now moving along with our spring fundraising events, which make up a large part of our annual operating revenue. If we said everything was peachy keen, we'd be misleading you. Of course, like everyone, we too are feeling the pinch from this troubling economy. We want to assure our viewers, supporters and friends that your money is being used wisely-- we've made staff reductions, benefit changes and continue to work to find new ways to stretch every dollar.While we know times are tough, we hope you remember CET as not only your public television station here in Cincinnati, but also as a leading organization in education.

Our Learning Services department creates a variety of cirriculum kits and resources that teachers can use in their classrooms-- many times free of charge. “Won’t You Be My Neighbor? Day” is March 20th so get out your sweater!

Fred Rogers has been synonymous with PBS children’s programming for more than 40 years. When Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood made its national public television debut in 1968, Fred Rogers asked the nation’s children, and the parents watching alongside them, “Won’t you be my neighbor?” in his wonderful opening song. So, Family Communications, Inc., the nonprofit company behind the famous program (founded by Fred Rogers in 1971), chose to commemorate the life, work, and the enriching Mister Rogers' Neighborhood on his birthday by instituting “Won’t You Be My Neighbor? Day.”

This annual tradition began on March 20, 2008, what would have been Fred Rogers’ 80th birthday. They asked people to simply wear a sweater in his honor, or, better yet I think, to live a day keeping in mind the spirit of friendliness and caring, as demonstrated by Rogers on his program everyday all these many years. Couldn’t we all still learn from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood and extend some courtesy and kindness to our neighbors just because it makes us feel good? I can’t help but ponder how much Fred Rogers would've liked that. Perhaps you will be even more caring and compassionate on Friday, and if folks wonder why, you can remind them that March 20th is “Won’t You Be My Neighbor? Complete Story Difficult to Tell

Over the weekend I was asked by a friend how CET was weathering the financial situation. I responded by relating that just like most organizations, both profit and non profit, we have had to make cuts in staff, instituted reductions in pay and benefits, and reduce expenses across the board. I went on to say that I thought the community would continue to support CET and remained confident in our ability to get through this downturn..

My friend was a bit less optimistic. “There are so many non profits that are providing food, shelter and direct aid, he said. Don’t you think that CET might be looked at as icing on the cake?”

For sure CET does not daily address life and death situations. We don’t provide food or shelter to those needing it. Nevertheless, CET is much more than a TV station and the programs and services we provide do have a direct bearing on the quality of life for area residents.

Just last week, in cooperation with the Home Ownership Center of Greater Cincinnati, CET was a lead partner in providing a day-long phone bank and prime time informational TV program aimed at helping those who are facing foreclosure. This is the second time CET has provided this service with more than 3000 callers requesting information or assistance last Tuesday.

Over the past two years , the station has provided several instructional series targeted to those seeking a job for the first time or returning to the workforce. Programs are broadcast and made available on CETconnect.org.

You may have seen short spots on CET giving hints on parenting and early childhood education. These spots are only part of CET’s ongoing Early Childhood Education initiatives. Not only do we provide video materials on TV and CETconnect.org, but we regularly conduct workshops at our studio and throughout the area at churches and community centers helping care givers expand their knowledge and skills.

Students in classrooms throughout the region regularly use CET produced curriculum to learn about the basics of reading and writing as well as advanced science, economics and critical thinking.

The trusted programs broadcast daily are also a great service to those trying to figure out the complex issues facing our nation. The News Hour, Nightly Business Report and our local Focus and 5/3 Business Beat continue to provide in depth informative reporting.

The number of non-profits that partner with CET to expand their services and reach is nothing short of outstanding. Giants like UC and smaller critical social service agencies like the over-the-Rhine-based Emmanuel Community Center regularly use CET provided services to inform the public and expand contact with thier constituencies both local and world wide. The prestige garnered nationally by just one telecast of the CSO produced by CET has an incalculable benefit to local business looking to attract and retain a modern workforce.

Perhaps one of the issues facing CET is that of telling the complete story since CET is so much more than Sesame Street and Antiques Road Show.

CET Partners with Home Ownership Center, Others for Foreclosure Phone-a-thon

In these troubling economic times, foreclosure is not only a hot topic of discussion, but a reality for some residents in the Greater Cincinnati area.

To help residents understand and even avoid foreclosure, CET is partnering with Fannie Mae and the Home Ownership Center of Greater Cincinnati for a Foreclosure Phone-a-thon, Tuesday February 24 from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. If you have questions, you can call 1-877-7BuzzUs (1-877-728-9987) or visit http://www.buzzusnow.com/. After answering some preliminary questions, callers will be connected to a financial specialist in the CET studios.

In addition to the phone-a-thon, you can tune into CET tomorrow at 7:30pm for a special, live program hosted by Kathy Lehr. The program will include interviews with experts who will offer advice on how homeowners can avoid foreclosure. The program will be simulcast on public radio, 91.7 WVXU.

This morning, CET's Jack Dominic, Mayor Mark Mallory, Rep. Steve Driehaus, other local and state representatives and local dignitaries visited CET for a news conference to kick off this important event.

Presidential Use of New Tech Not New

During February the news programs and newspapers were overflowing with references to the similarities between our new Commander in Chief, Barack Obama, and our sixteenth President, Abraham Lincoln. Commentators and reporters have discussed ad nauseam how the two men inherited extremely difficult national issues and how they both tried to reach out to friend and foe alike to forge a truly representative administration. The
ability of these men to effectively communicate is another attribute that they share. While we may think of this communication as verbal, you might find it surprising that both embraced some very cutting edge technologies.

President Obama’s “Blackberry” affinity is already become a topic of many commentaries and even some legal maneuvering within the government. He can continue to use it, albeit with great restriction. Just as it was during the campaign, now as his administration picks up momentum, we see the extensive use of the web and social networking tools like “MySpace” and “Facebook” being used to communicate with a new generation of engaged citizens. Even news events are chronicled and delivered at light speed using all form of new technologies from video on the web to cell phone instant messages. Truly the Obama administration has fully embraced the new technologies of the times.

I have to admit that up until about a year ago I would never have thought of Abraham Lincoln as a technology maven, but after reading a book by Tom Wheeler titled “Mr. Lincoln’s T-Mails,” I became fascinated with how well he understood and made use of the new technologies of his time.

Well before Lincoln began his presidency, Samuel Morse was developing his invention for using electrical sparks to distribute messages over wires spanning long distances. In fact, it was in 1843 that congress appropriated funds to string a telegraph wire from Baltimore to Washington, DC.

Skipping ahead to Lincoln’s time in office we learn that he was the first president not only to use the telegraph but that he had a telegraph installed in the Whitehouse. During the Civil War it was reported that he regularly spent considerable time with his personal telegraph operator receiving real time reports from his generals on the battlefields and sending back orders. The latter was most likely not always appreciated by the Generals.

Lincoln also understood that with the telegraph breaking down distance and geography barriers, he could no longer rely on the same speech for all occasions. Since the telegraph enabled a report of a speech made in Washington to be printed in the newspaper in Baltimore that very day, he could not give it again two days later when he traveled to Baltimore.

It is fascinating that although some 150 years separates these two men, the similarities remain remarkable.

The Big DTV Day is Here....Not!

I thought that it might be a good idea to summarize where CET stands relating to turning off our analog broadcasting transmitter. For almost a year you have watched our spots and messages on CET informing you that on February 17, 2009, at the stroke of midnight, analog Channel 48 would be no more. We produced call in programs and set up phone banks to answer questions. We have a blog and a DTV call in hot line. We mailed out thousands of brochures explaining the change. All of this was done to get ready for the big transition. What Happened?

Well like it or not our federal government looked around and decided that our efforts and those of most other TV stations nationwide did not motivate enough people to get ready for digital-only broadcasting….so they changed the deadline. It is now set for Friday, June 12, 2009. But I would not hold my breath!

It is true that stations may request the FCC allow them to cease analog operation on February 17th but few have. CET was looking forward to signing off our aging and electricity hungry analog transmitter. We spend more than $6000 a month with our good friends at Duke Energy to keep it running.

After considering that CET would be among the few stations this area to be digital only if we did go off on February 17th and since we have already received more than 3000 calls to our analog telephone survey line, we decided to wait. We are not sure that we will wait until June 12th. In any case we must provide a minimum of 30 days notice if we plan to cease analog transmissions. So stay tuned and be sure to get that DTV converter set up.

First, you'll notice the cosmetic changes-- a new look overall. And now, you'll be able to see a one-line description of programs, instead of just show titles. Of course, for more information on each particular program, you can still access that by clicking on the show you're looking at.

Secondly, you can now mark specific CET channels or programs as favorites, to make searching easier for you. Then you can view everything that will be on our air, or narrow it down to things you select as favorites. It's just another way you can personalize your CETconnect experience!

You'll also find that you can now select how you receive CET. Choose your provider by editing your settings (see the right hand side of your screen) so you know which of CET's channels you receive, what channel number they are and what is on air right now, tonight and beyond.

But perhaps my favorite part about the new setup is the 'reminder' option. When clicking on a show, simply choose to be reminded about the program-- it's that simple, and you'll never miss one of your CET favorites again. (Just remember to check your email, because that's where your reminders will end up.)

There's so much you can do with this new setup, so head over to the TV Schedule and get acquainted with the new look and features. What do you think? Do you like being able to personalize? What features do you find most useful? Which ones don't you care for?

Video Briefing regarding CET's Funding

I would be less than honest if I told you that we are not concerned about the current economic situation. With CET’s major fund raising activities coming in the spring we want you to know what is happening at your station and what we are doing to address the funding issues. We have prepared a short video briefing that you may wish to view. It is only about 5 minutes in length and it outlines some steps we have taken to address funding shortfalls and how we are trying hard to preserve your programs and the critical educational services we provide to students and teachers throughout the region. Are you a cat person, or a dog person?

Some people couldn't live without their furry, friendly felines. Others are devoted to all-things dog.

Growing up, I had dogs. Big dogs, like yellow labs and golden retrievers to small dogs like my miniature poodle and my current pal: a chihuahua dachshund mix named Daisy. (Check out her picture in this post... it's her 15 minutes of fame, I guess you could say). So I'm a dog person. There's nothing better than coming home to a wagging, wiggly dog who has missed you all day!

But what makes people so devoted to one animal over another? Or, better yet, why are some people passionate for both? Nature is out to answer that question in the episode, "Why We Love Cats and Dogs" that airs Sunday, February 15 at 8pm on CET. Tune in for insight on this age-old question, and why we develop such an intimate bond with these animals.

Calling all Arthur Fans...

Does your child love Arthur? (Or, do you know a child who does?) If so, PBS has an exciting new contest that may be of interest to them.

The creators of Arthur are looking for a new character to feature on the show-- and want Arthur fans to contribute. All you have to do is click here for an entry form and contest rules, then have them brainstorm their ideas for Arthur's new friend. The winner will be featured in a future episode of Arthur, as well as their character. The winner also receives a prize pack with Arthur merchandise.

It's completely free to enter, but entries have to be received by March 31, and the contest is only open to kids between the ages of 6 and 12.

Program change tonight: Catch NewsHour Coverage of the Presidential Press Conference

Tonight will be airing NewsHour coverage of the Presidential Press Conference at 10:30 pm. The program will last about 40 minutes and is a delayed broadcast. You can get more information about the program at The NewsHour's website.

We originally planned to air the 30-minute preview of the upcoming American Experience series, "We Shall Remain," that takes a look at Native Americans and their role in our country's history. If you have not seen the preview on our air, you can still find out more about the series online. There you will find the entire preview, behind-the-scenes photos and more.

Lincoln, Lincoln and more Lincoln

Thursday, February 12 marks the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln's birthday, and CET has two shows that will give you an inside look at his life and death.

First, you can catch The Assassination of Abraham Lincoln tonight at 9pm on CET, which tells the story of Lincoln and his death, inflicted by famous actor, John Wilkes Booth. The program gives you an inside look at the assassination and the manhunt that followed to find his killer.

Then, on Wednesday at 9p.m. CET offers a look at the life of the 16th president on Looking for Lincoln. The program goes beyond what you see in the history books to offer perspective on who Lincoln was as a person by looking at his past and hearing the views of well-known historians, such as Doris Kearns Goodwin. There are also a lot of resources and interactive material on the PBS website that relate to this program... and don't forget to test your knowledge about Lincoln by taking the online quiz.

CET is also involved in the Lincoln Legacy project, a local initiative to commemorate the life and presidency of Lincoln. You can find out more about that project, including a birthday celebration taking place this week, by clicking here.
